Glossary of Common Education Terms

  • Academic – Relating to, or associated with an education institution (college, university, academy). Simply put, educational in nature.

  • Assignment – A specific type of an academic task assigned by an authority figure. Essays, reviews, reports, case studies, and so on.

  • College – A self-governing educational institution or a constituent part of a university. Sometimes interchangeable with university.

  • Course – A class (or a series of lectures) dealing with a particular subject. Courses usually last for a single term in academic institutions.

  • Degree – A document given to students upon successful completion of an educational institution.

  • Dissertation – An academic document that supports the author’s findings regarding a certain topic. Usually needed for accreditation or graduation from a higher learning institution.

  • Education – A social process of teaching and learning – accruing knowledge and developing skills.

  • Essay – A composition dedicated to a specific subject or idea; there are short essays and those with a much larger scope and page count.

  • Paper – An academic work that usually gets published in a scientific journal or magazine.

  • Plagiarism – An act of borrowing someone’s work without referencing and also presenting said borrowed content as original.

  • Professor – The highest ranking member of an academic faculty. Sometimes a senior teacher at an institution of higher education.

  • Research – A process of examining and collecting information; looking into details of a particular topic.

  • Review – A critical report on specific items: books, movies, performances, articles and so on. Usually written in order to interpret an item within a certain medium.

  • Student – A person actively studying and going to school, college, university,

  • Study – The process dedicated to the sole purpose of accruing knowledge. Said process naturally occurs in educational institutions.

  • Terms – Parts of an academic year: quarter, semester, trimester. Sometimes a description of a specific concept.

  • Thesis – The main point of an essay, a position offered by the person in charge of delivering arguments and findings. Sometimes interchangeable with dissertation.

  • University – An academic institution dealing with higher (tertiary) education which grants degrees to its graduates upon completion. Sometimes interchangeable with college.

  • Writer – An author of literary work. The person in charge of writing an academic assignment.

  • Writing – A process of forming a written composition. Also a way of human communication.
